What is allergy?
An “allergy” is a hypersensitivity to a particular substance that is normally harmless to most people. These allergy-causing substances are known as “allergens”. The symptoms of allergy are caused by your immune system reacting, or over-reacting, to these otherwise harmless substances.
An intolerance is not an allergy. However, an allergy may cause an intolerance, or be a form of intolerance. Although allergy and intolerance symptoms may be similar, the causes, our bodies’ reactions and the health implications can be different.
Correctly identifying and treating an allergy or intolerance requires careful medical diagnosis and appropriate management.
